Lecturer, writer, researcher, Donovan McGrath is an Alumnus of the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies. At SOAS he gained a BA Honours degree in African Language and Culture.
He also studied Swahili Poetry, the Swahili Novel and Advanced Swahili Usage at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Later on, at Middlesex University, he achieved a Master of Arts degree in Film and Visual Cultures.
Donovan has taught African World Studies since 1993, Swahili Language since 1997, and African Film Studies since 2001.
He is co-author, with Lutz Marten, of Colloquial Swahili, published by Routledge 2003 (1st Edition), 2012 (2nd Edition) and 2015 (United States of America). He has also written extensively on the subject of film and theatre for Live magazine here in the UK and book reviews (in Swahili) for Femina magazine in Tanzania.
Donovan currently teaches Swahili at the Language Centre at University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies.
He also teaches Radio Production in the award-winning community radio station Radio Wanno, based in HMP Wandsworth.
